Spice lovers travel to eat at this smart Indian restaurant with its starched napery, professional service and excellent food. They come for cardamom-scented somosas; juicy chicken tikka; fall-of-the-fork Punjabi lamb in spinach gravy; and the bright, clear flavours of Madras chicken in tomato and coconut sauce. Kulfi (icecream) is sweet and smooth, sprinkled with ground pistachios. The modestly priced wine list has several aromatic choices well suited to the menu, including some from the owner’s Wildcroft Estate.

Don’t be fooled by its uninspiring suburban-strip home in Somerville: Tulsi is far from pedestrian. The open kitchen adds a buzz to the tasteful contemporary decor and the quality of the cooking outguns the menu of standard Indian restaurant dishes. There might be the Kashmiri specialty of Kabuli naan; a feisty Goan Vindaloo; or some classic southern dishes such as jheenga saag (prawn and spinach curry). Kulfi (icecream) is a great end to a terrific meal.

As you enter Tulsi (named after the holy basil), the wood-framed windows that slide open to the street suggest this is no ordinary Indian restaurant. Cream walls, bentwood chairs and smart charcoal carpet confirm the tasteful impression. So does the food: tender, flavorsome curries with generous chunks of meat or vegetables. Lamb roghan josh zings with fresh coriander and silvers of ginger, and there are delectable breads such as tandoor-baked kabuli naan stuffed with fruits and nuts.
